BE PERFECT
Scripture: Matthew 5:48
Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
This sounds impossible, but it's not. Jesus would never command us to do something that we are not capable of doing. He didn't command us to be all powerful or to be all knowing - these things are beyond our grasp. But He told us to be perfect, as our heavenly Father is perfect.
The Greek word for perfect is teleios. It means to reach an intended end or completion. In other places in the Bible, it is translated as mature. It is used in reference to a person who has reached the full measure of what he is capable of.
If, for example your body is designed to grow tall to be six feet and you grow to be six feet, you can be said to have reached ‘perfection’.
In the context of this passage, Jesus is saying you can be perfect. You can fulfill your purpose in life; you can be the person that God designed you to be.
God created us in His image and likeness so we have the capacity to grow into the fullness of His image and likeness. We can love, forgive and care for people in a way that reflects the image of God to others.
To do that, we need two critical factors in our lives:
• The Word of God. God and His Word are one. As we read and study His Word, we are reading and studying God. As we practice His Word, we are practicing God’s ways.
• The Holy Spirit. God and His Spirit are also one. His Spirit gives us the power to practice His ways in our lives. The more we allow His Spirit to fill us and control us, the less our humanity controls us.
Prayer: Lord, I want to be more like You. Scriptural Reading: Matthew 5:43-48
