Scripture: Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Faith is both ‘substance’ and ‘evidence’. The word ‘substance’ means ‘confident assurance’; evidence means ‘proof’. So faith gives us the confident assurance and proof for the things we hope for but have not seen.

Each one of us has things we hope for but have not seen yet. For example, you may be living in a tiny house in a rough neighbourhood but in your heart you have hope.

You expect that life will be better one day – that is hope. The only thing is that although you have this hope that life will be better one day, you don’t seem to see anything that shows that what you hope for will happen.

Some of us have hope that one day we will be well or that one day we will prosper. Hope is good but hope must have a substance or a basis.

Where hope tells you that things will get better in the future, faith shows you a proof of what you are hoping for will happen. Faith moves you from the future to the present. Faith is the substance; it is the evidence.

It is great to have good intentions and to expect good things for our lives. However, God expects us to move to another level. It is the level of faith.

When you operate by faith, you move from wishing for something to knowing that what we have believed for will become a reality.

Faith in God is not based on mere wishes or good intentions. It is based on the clear promises of God in word. Just because we need something does not mean God will give it to us.
