WHY WORRY?
Scripture: Matthew 6:28-29

“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”

Lilies grow from a deep root. Although their flowers may look fragile on the surface, their roots are very deep. They drive their roots deep down into the soil to receive nourishment. Even when the surface around them is dry, they find a way of tapping into rich nutrition deep down.

In a similar way, we must also have deep roots of faith in God in order to receive nourishment. Our faith must go beyond the surface. It must go beyond our fears and doubts so that it can find a place in God’s word and promises.

Lilies do not toil or spin at spinning wheels to adorn themselves with beauty. Their beauty comes naturally as they go about their purpose in the world. As they plant their roots deep and draw into the rich nutrients of the soil, they burst forth into beauty.

They don’t have to toil and worry about how they are going to look. They don’t worry about whether they will bear flowers or not. All they do is to draw nourishment from the soil and the beautiful flowers will show up.

The word assures us today that the God who clothes the flowers can also clothe us. The God who puts a song in the mouth of the birds can also put a song in our mouths. He who causes the plants to bear fruit can also make us bear fruit.

The fantastic colours of flowers, the cheery chirpings of the birds, the majesty of the mountains all speak one voice – God cares!

Prayer: You are the source of my Strength O Lord, and I plant my roots in You. Scriptural Reading Matthew 6:25-34
